In August YIT Ehitus signed up for two very important social projects – the construction of Surju kindergarten in Pärnu County, due for completion next year, and the complete renovation of Kihnu’s museum.
The Kihnu museum project will involve the renovation of the entire building, allowing a more extensive exhibition to be displayed in it. The project is scheduled for completion by 28 April 2009 at a total cost of around 8 million kroons.
The museum, which forms part of the UNESCO heritage space of the island of Kihnu, was established in 1974 in a former school building which was never reconstructed for its new purpose. It is for this reason that many of the opportunities available for exhibiting the island’s heritage culture have not been taken.
In the course of the renovations the area of floor space will be increased, the rooms will be redesigned to better suit the museum’s needs and heating, ventilation, water and sewerage systems will be constructed. The improved conditions will enable a larger number of displays to be erected, including the return to the museum of the paintings of the Kihnu naïvists, which are currently held by the Estonian History Museum.
The design work on the museum was completed by architects from Studio Paralleel OÜ and PB Sille OÜ. Exhibition and interior design work was provided by the Laika, Belka & Sterlka design bureau.
The Surju nursery school project in Pärnu County has been one of Surju municipality’s priorities for many years. A contract for construction work was entered into on 11 August, with a deadline of 15 May 2009. There will be space in the new nursery for two groups – a total of 40 children. The budget for the project is 8.2 million kroons.
