Library is Deed of the Year in Pärnu

The title “Deed of the Year” has this year been awarded to the city central library, its construction now completed. The Pärnu residents have voted second place for Jüri Jaanson and Tõnu Endrekson, the double sculls team that won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing. Third place in this year’s contest has gone to the monument dedicated to the proclamation of the Republic of Estonia, opened on Rüütli Square.

“This is very pleasant news indeed,” rejoices Saima Andla, Director of the Pärnu Central Library. “I personally expected our excellent rowing team to win this title but the fact that our library has been deemed worthy instead proves that the new library building is truly a useful addition in the opinion of the residents of Pärnu. The people have taken a real fancy to this building during the first couple of months, and we have had many visitors.”

Many “Deed of the Year” votes in Pärnu have also been cast in favour of the Pärnumaa anthology publication, the Raeküla and Vana-Pärnu water and sewerage system project completion and the quadruple sculls team gold medal at the European Championship.

The “Deed of the Year” award, consisting of a figurine created by ceramic artist Ene Tapfer, a letter of appreciation designed by calligraphist Vello Paluoja and a framed facsimile copy of the very first issue of the Pärnu Postimees newspaper, will be handed over to the winner’s representative at the New Year Gala at the Pärnu Concert Hall.

The “Deed of the Year” title is awarded to the organisation in Pärnu that has been of the greatest importance to the city or its residents during the current year. The nominations for the “Deed of the Year” are proposed by the Pärnu city government and the Pärnu Postimees newspaper. During one month the Pärnu Postimees publishes the list of the deeds that the newspaper and the city government deem worthy of the title and the readers can then vote for what they consider the most important achievement.

This is the 8th instance of the annual “Deed of the Year” contest.

Previously the honour was bestowed on: 2001 – Endla Theatre annex, 2002 – Pärnu Concert Hall, 2003 – Vana Market’s new building, 2004 – new Pärnu Hospital building, 2005 – gym for schools located in the city centre, 2006 – beach promenade, 2007 – the Bedwetters group wins in the New European Sounds category at the MTV Music Awards.
